Plus vs Thin Models

by HeatherG on January 26, 2012

Over the last week or so an article in PLUS Model Magazine has gone viral and continues to spread into TV news shows and more. So what’s the article you ask? In the January issue, PLUS Model Magazine shows plus size model Katya Zharkova and a straight size model in the nude photographs with statistics about today’s dangerously thin straight size models and the continuously shrinking frames of plus size models.

One of the statistics reads: “Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8 percent less than the average woman. Today she weighs 23 percent less” and “most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.”

PLUS Model Magazine editor, Madeline Figueroa Jones, then published a blog titled “Plus Size Bodies, What Is Wrong With Them Anyway,” which has spread all over the internet. She asked the question why the fashion industry is afraid to cater towards plus size women in their advertising but is willing to accept their money.

Has the fashion industry gone too far with their models? What do you think about the controversy? Would you rather see “regular” sized women in fashion magazines instead of the current trend? How do you think the models of today are effecting how women feel and think about themselves?

Best Beauty Tips and Tricks

by HeatherG on January 12, 2012

Just a few ways to help you break out of those winter beauty ruts.

1. Bangs! Choose your poison from wispy and sideswept to pin-straight and full. If your not sure, forgo perfectly blunt ends — choppy, layered bangs are more flattering for most face shapes and easier to trim yourself.

2. Try a sunny disposition with a sculpted, sun-kissed complexion. Dust parts of your face the sun would naturally hit, like the bridge of the nose, forehead, and cheekbones, with a bronzer that’s just one to two shades deeper than your skin tone.

3. Tangerine dream eyes. Splash over lids, lips, or cheeks a delicate washes of pink, apricot, and sea-foam green. The official signal to the start of spring.

4. Wear non-predictable lipstick. Wear almost-bare faces with striking black-cherry- and pomegranate-stained lips. Try out MAC’s Pro Lipstick in Full Chocolate and Most Mocha — rich chestnut shades without gloss. A matte finish makes it fresh.

5. Try out different types of braids fashioned across the crown or cascading down the back. Also apply a pomade to fingers before braiding to ensure a good grip on hair.

Tangerine Tango: Pantone’s 2012 Color Of The Year

by HeatherG on December 30, 2011

In 2011 PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle lifted our spirits and encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. Tangerine Tango, a reddish-orange, is keeping right on track with those same thoughts. It was selected because, “there’s the element of encouragement with orange, it’s building on the ideas of courage and action, that we want to move on to better things. I think it would be a disservice to go with a relaxed, soothing color now,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, told the Associated Press.

Pantone’s color of the year always has an annual influence on fashion and design. “Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2012, including Tommy Hilfiger, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe by Shaun Kearney, Elie Tahari and Adrienne Vittadini, are incorporating this attractive orange into their spring collections. A fun, lively take on a traditional autumnal hue, Tangerine Tango will surely carry through to fall fashion as well. Pair it with super-saturated colors like hot pink and blue for color-blocking looks, or match it with neutrals for a pop of color.”

Pantone is calling Tangerine Tango, “a winner in cosmetics because of its versatility, Tangerine Tango is a bit exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way. Add a sultry flair to lips, cheeks and nails with Tangerine Tango. An unexpected eye shadow color, Tangerine Tango is a complementary opposite that flatters blue or green eyes. When paired with brown eyes, it brings out an amber cast.” Sephora’s already hopped on the tangerine train with an exclusive Pantone color collaboration to debut in March – think tangerine lips and nails.
