Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is well known amongst many as Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s nearly impossible not to know someone who has been affected in some way by this fast acting disease. I’ve stood next to two friends through diagnosis and treatment, and as a woman it’s humbling to realize that you could be only one day away from a similar diagnosis.

So this past spring when our publisher sent out new titles for 2008, I was immediately attracted to one called Voices of Breast Cancer. The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage and Strength. I ordered a copy for myself, and have fallen in love with the book.

Voice of Breast Cancer

Voices of Breast Cancer

Filled with real life stories of lives forever transformed, Voices of Breast Cancer is craftily edited to take you on a journey from finding a lump all the way to treatment options. Survivors themselves tell stories; whether it is a narrative or beautifully written poem readers are instantly drawn in. It’s hard not to imagine yourself, your sister or your best friend writing the same story. In addition, there are brief medical explanations of treatments (as well as advice on situations like when to get second opinions) making this an all around guide for anyone experiencing this disease.

<!–[if !supportEmptyParas]–> <!–[endif]–>

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, PinkApple.com is offering Voices of Breast Cancer on our site for the month of October. Proceeds of our purchase of this book were donated to The Healing Project, an organization founded in 2005 to create a community of support for those challenged by chronic or life threatening illnesses. For more information about this outstanding organization please visit their website.

‘Personal Lubricant University’

When I joined the PinkApple family over three years ago, I was amazed at the world of products that I had never known existed- and part of the reason we wanted to start blogging was to educate our readers and shoppers about these products.  This week, we will explore personal lubricants.  Hopefully you’ll be able to learn something new, and perhaps find a product to enhance your sex life as well.

Water Based Lubricants:

  • The majority of lubricants you encouter will be water based.
  • They are often most recommended by doctors and health clinics
  • Most feel “thin” to watery during use and more tacky when dry
  • Easily cleaned up with water
  • SAFE FOR USE WITH CONDOMS
  • Major brands include: KY, Astroglide and ID Lubes
  • Moderately priced and easily found in stores

Silicone Lubricants:

  • Created from dimethicone- typically used to treat skin conditions so if you have sensitive skin, this product could be great for you
  • Has a velvety consistency and feel
  • Does not wash away easily with water and is very long lasting.  On the negative side, it can be difficult to wash off sheets and furniture if spilled, so use cautiously.
  • Because silicone does not break down easily in water, can be used in showers and baths
  • Great as a skin moisturizer and for massages
  • SAFE FOR USE WITH CONDOMS
  • Common Brands include: Wet Platinum, Eros and ID Millennium
  • Moderate to ‘expensive’ in price, but much longer lasting so the value is equal to that of water based lubricants.
  • Somewhat more difficult to find at the local drug store, but increasing in popularity

Some manufactures even suggest using their silicone lubricants on the bottom of sleds and toboggans in the winter months to enhance your winter sporting fun- a win/win situation!

Oil Based Lubricants:

The best way to describe oil based lubricants is to mention Petroleum Jelly or Mineral Oil.  Oil Based Lubricants are thinned down versions of these products.  Obviously these lubricants are very “slippery” and long lasting.  However,  PinkApple does not currently offer any brands of Oil Based Lubricants as they are NOT safe for use with latex condoms.  Latex is easily broken down by the properties of oil based lubricants, and to avoid any confusion to our customers, we have decided not to offer oil based lubes at this time.

There are also many many varieties of flavored lubricantswarming lubricants you can experiment with!  It’s best to try many different types until you find one (or more!) that meet your specific needs.  You may be surprised at what you discover.

Is this the Baby Blues or Postpartum?

The Hollywood baby boom has brought Postpartum Depression into the forefront of media attention. Who can forget the fierce debate between Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields? What really happened with Britney Spears after the birth of her second child? So, how can you tell if you just have the Baby Blues, or if you need to seek help from professionals?

Baby blues are common within the first 3 to 5 days after delivery, and can last as long as two weeks. A new mom with the blues may cry more easily than usual and may have trouble sleeping or feel irritable, sad, and “on edge” emotionally. These symptoms are actually similar to those experienced during premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Postpartum is a condition that occurs in only 10 to 20% of new mothers. Some health professionals call it postpartum non-psychotic depression.

Postpartum may be of concern to you if:

  • your symptoms include depressed mood, tearfulness, inability to enjoy pleasurable activities, trouble sleeping, fatigue, appetite problems, suicidal thoughts, feelings of inadequacy as a parent, and impaired concentration
  • you obsessively worry about the baby’s health and well-being
  • these feelings interfere with a your ability to care for your baby
  • these symptoms persist for two or more weeks

If you’re experiencing these any symptoms (or other unusual symptoms not included here); Don’t worry! Postpartum is easily treatable by your doctor and rarely becomes a long lasting problem.

Share your concerns with your doctor as well as your friends and family to get the help, support and guidance you need. Being a new mother is a challenge you don’t have to face alone.

We’ve recently added a book to our line up that explains Postpartum Depression in a clear, easily understood way. The author, Linda Sebastian, suffered from postpartum anxiety herself and has been a nurse practitioner for more than 20 years specializing in psychiatric disorders.

Among the topics covered

  • Who is at risk for postpartum depression
  • Symptoms and causes of postpartum depression and anxiety
  • Effects on the baby and family members
  • Why so many women are caught off guard by these disorders
  • Why health professionals are often unprepared
  • Options for mental health treatment and medications
  • Advice for fathers and other family members

You can buy the book here:

Readers: Please share your stories with us about any postpartum experiences you may have had.

More about IUD’s

IUD: Intrauterine Device

I recently read an article about IUD’s, infection and infertility- and I realized that this is a form of birth control I know virtually nothing about. So I set out to learn as much about these contraptions as I could.

Contraption is a pretty good description of what and IUD looks like. As you can see below, they look nothing short of intimidating.

But in fact, the devices are not much larger than a penny and are simply inserted by your physician through the cervix into the uterus. How they work gets a little more tricky.

The Copper T (brand name Paraguard) releases small amounts of copper into the uterus which immobilizes sperm, making it difficult for them to swim properly. As you can imagine, it also changes the lining of your uterus interfering with the mobilization of eggs out of the fallopian tube. It does not prevent ovulation, however it changes the environment so much that conception becomes impossible. These types of IUD’s last approximately 10 years before needing replaced and can only be obtained through your physician or local health clinic.

The Hormonal (brand name Mirena) releases a hormone that, the manufacturer admits is unclear exactly how it prevents pregnancy but works in multiple ways. First it thickens cervical mucus making it difficult for sperm to swim into the uterus and secondly thins the uterine lining making implantation of any fertilized eggs just as impossible. Mirena device lasts for about 5 years, and like the Paraguard, can only be obtained through your physician or local health clinic.

Including initial visits, IUD’s can cost several hundred dollars- but if you consider the long term contraceptive benefits the overall cost is small. Paraguard IUD’s have a 99% effective rate (fewer than 1 out of 100 women will become pregnant) while Mirena IUD boasts a 99.9% effective rate (1 in 1000 women will become pregnant). As with any birth control method, it’s best to consult your physician before making any long term decisions.

Have any of our readers tried IUD’s, and if so what have your experiences been?

Next best thing since “The Pill”…

Some of our best selling products have always been Spermicidal Contraceptive Foams. While these products are a great option in contraceptive freedom for women everywhere, they are best used in monogamous relationships since they provide no protection against Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections. Well Ladies, there is a revolutionary product on the way that will change the face of birth control forever. Instead Sciences, Inc are in the process of completing clinical trials on a gel they’re calling Amphora.

Amphora is designed to coat the walls of your vagina preventing transmission of diseases and infections while maintaining that Oh-so-sensitive pH balance that is often disturbed with harsh spermicides and latex products. The best part?? It doubles as a contraceptive gel as well, prohibiting sperm from moving through the vaginal walls towards the cervix. Equally impressive, Amphora can be inserted over the cervix with a comfortable device (think diaphragm) as many as 12 hours before intercourse. It’s still too soon to tell, but trails are taking place now to evaluate if Amphora could even protect us against HIV/AIDS.

Currently, manufactures are hoping to have this on the shelves for us as early as 2011, but we can all agree that it’s worth the wait for such sexual freedom and protection.
