Looking Good for Facebook

by HeatherG on February 3, 2012

You’ve always been told that first impressions are the most important, this same rule apples even for the internet. Social Networking has really taken off and looks like its here to stay – for a while. And no mater what social media outlet you use, a profile picture is probably the most important step to your online profile. It’s your first chance to introduce and say something about yourself. Connie Wang at Refinery29.com came up with some very good tips to get your well on your way to the best photos of you!

Here’s what Connie had to say:

1. Lighting! – Areas with soft (shaded, cloudy, morning-or-evening) light always make for beautiful photos. If you’re taking a close-up, having a light source behind you will cast a halo around your face.

2. Party Time! — If you’ve got a camera that lets you play with the shutter speed, change it to the “nighttime” or “slow-sync shutter.” You’ll get some trippy light effects on your party pics, which always make for an awesome photo!

3. There’s An App For That — If you’ve got a smart phone, tablet, or computer, you can add cool filters to your photos with a variety of applications. Our favorites include Instagram, Fisheye Lite, 8mm Vintage Camera, and Photo Booth.

4. Don’t Futz With “Fun” Filters — You may have played around with them for your Friendster or MySpace profile, but it’s time to grow up, stop making your face glow green and blue, and avoid using those stock filters.

5. Learn Some Photoshop Basics — Removing red eye, auto-adjusting levels, and upping the contrast are all really easy tricks you can do to make your images really shine (a whole bunch are listed, here!). If you don’t have Photoshop, this free service, Photoscape, has all the basics you need.

6. No Selfies — Taking your own portrait is one of the biggest faux pas around. Mirror shots or extended arm shots are only okay if you’re 15 and getting ready for Homecoming. If you have to, there are ways to maneuver the camera so your arm isn’t in the shot, but don’t think you’re fooling anyone…

7. Get Natural — If you want to avoid that “senior photo” look, the best thing you can do is to use an activity as an opportunity to take a new profile picture. Going water skiing? Attempting to demolish a banana split? Hanging out with a bunch of goats? Cameras out!

8. +1s Allowed, +5s, Not So Much — If you want your BFF or significant other to join in on the fun, that’s totally okay. It starts getting confusing, though, when you’re posting a huge group shot as your own profile picture. Which one are you again?

9. Caption This! — A picture might be worth 1,000 words, but sometimes, a few more sentences are necessary. Utilize the caption function to add a backstory to your photo and encourage comments and likes.

Now your well on your way to looking like a pro in your profile. To read more tips and tricks on beauty and fashion visit Refinery29.com.

Plus vs Thin Models

by HeatherG on January 26, 2012

Over the last week or so an article in PLUS Model Magazine has gone viral and continues to spread into TV news shows and more. So what’s the article you ask? In the January issue, PLUS Model Magazine shows plus size model Katya Zharkova and a straight size model in the nude photographs with statistics about today’s dangerously thin straight size models and the continuously shrinking frames of plus size models.

One of the statistics reads: “Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8 percent less than the average woman. Today she weighs 23 percent less” and “most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.”

PLUS Model Magazine editor, Madeline Figueroa Jones, then published a blog titled “Plus Size Bodies, What Is Wrong With Them Anyway,” which has spread all over the internet. She asked the question why the fashion industry is afraid to cater towards plus size women in their advertising but is willing to accept their money.

Has the fashion industry gone too far with their models? What do you think about the controversy? Would you rather see “regular” sized women in fashion magazines instead of the current trend? How do you think the models of today are effecting how women feel and think about themselves?

Best Beauty Tips and Tricks

by HeatherG on January 12, 2012

Just a few ways to help you break out of those winter beauty ruts.

1. Bangs! Choose your poison from wispy and sideswept to pin-straight and full. If your not sure, forgo perfectly blunt ends — choppy, layered bangs are more flattering for most face shapes and easier to trim yourself.

2. Try a sunny disposition with a sculpted, sun-kissed complexion. Dust parts of your face the sun would naturally hit, like the bridge of the nose, forehead, and cheekbones, with a bronzer that’s just one to two shades deeper than your skin tone.

3. Tangerine dream eyes. Splash over lids, lips, or cheeks a delicate washes of pink, apricot, and sea-foam green. The official signal to the start of spring.

4. Wear non-predictable lipstick. Wear almost-bare faces with striking black-cherry- and pomegranate-stained lips. Try out MAC’s Pro Lipstick in Full Chocolate and Most Mocha — rich chestnut shades without gloss. A matte finish makes it fresh.

5. Try out different types of braids fashioned across the crown or cascading down the back. Also apply a pomade to fingers before braiding to ensure a good grip on hair.
